Hello San Diego Blue Star Families Community!
I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I am sure I spoke to you at some point during an event you may have attended when you signed up to be a member of our wonderful community here in San Diego, if not, I hope to soon! My name is Crystal Gates and I am the Regional Director for Blue Star Families here in San Diego. I am a military spouse and my husband is attached to a command at MCAS Miramar. We began our journey with the Marine Corps over 20 years ago and it honestly has been an amazing time. We have three children, have endured 9 deployments (he 11!) and an overseas duty station. I look forward to many more adventures over the upcoming years as he completes his career and we transition to young retirees.
My role as a Regional Director is to build a community here in San Diego for our military families that ultimately connects us to the civilian communities we live in. My goal is to foster events and programs here in the San Diego area that will help you as a military family to stay involved and engaged in your community. Ultimately, you will know each year that the program or resource we have provided will be available to you and something you and your family can look forward to. Also, a community goal within Blue Star Families is for the programs and resources you experience here sets a cadence for you of what to expect as you and your family PCS to other chapter areas.
Here’s what is happening right now with Blue Star Families and in our San Diego community:
–Blue Star Museums has launched and is off to a great start! This awesome program will continue for our military families until Labor Day. If you are traveling please look up your destination on the website, arts.gov/bluestarmuseums, and check out what museums are participating! Make sure when you and your family go to a Blue Star Museum this summer you come back to our website, www.bluestarfam.org, and stay engaged with us as you visit museums and create art by tagging your photos with #bluestarmuseums and sharing on our Facebook page. I will be at the San Diego Botanic Garden a few times over the summer, check out our events page to find out all the great opportunities, https://bluestarfam.org/events/. Also, be on the lookout for more information on an event at the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum in September!
–I am looking for a volunteer leadership team here in our San Diego community that can support me in our efforts to engage and spread the mission of Blue Star Families! This team would help me during events and take information about Blue Star Families to the commands you are involved in on your installation or meetings in your local community! If this is something you might be interested in please email me and we can talk more about this awesome opportunity!
I am very excited to be apart of our community here in San Diego and look forward to seeing you at one of our great events. If you have thoughts or suggestions for the good of our community please don’t hesitate to call or email me! I am always available to meet for coffee to discuss as well!!
Thank you all for your time!
